Shanel Smith has always been fascinated by photos. When she was a little girl she’d spend countless hours playing with her mother’s Polaroid cameras. Shanel finally embraced her passion for photography at the renowned LaGuardia High School of Music & Art in Manhattan, New York. She began her high school career as a painter. However, after countless classes of training in drawing, technique and painting; the Queens native discovered that she was better equipped to channel her creativity into "drawing with light" by using photography.
Shanel began working for her school as the yearbook photographer and then continued to hone her craft in college. Inspired by life, and fellow photographer Cindy Sherman, Smith founded her own photography business, Shanel Smith Photography, where she built her clientele by photographing fashion shows, professional models and an eclectic array of social events that included, but was not limited to the NYC college scene.
Her work was also showcased annually at the art gallery event at Hillwood Commons of Long Island University’s Post Campus.
Upon graduating with a B.A. in Photography and Psychology, Shanel, decided to relocate to Atlanta, G.A. where she was discovered by Toowah Ra'Atum, the founder and lead photographer of G.I.G. Photography. Smith is currently an assistant photographer for the vastly growing company.
“Every time someone looks at my photographs, I hope they see a little bit of me. I try to share some of myself every single time I release the shutter.”
TooWah Ra’Atum is the founder and lead photographer of G.I.G. Photography. Originally from Los Angeles, CA, TooWah completed his photography studies in early 2001.
